What a 169.254.x.x address means
A 169.254.x.x address is a fallback (link-local) address. It commonly appears when a device is configured for DHCP but no DHCP server is available on the network.
Why it happens
Fallback addressing allows limited local communication on the same physical network segment. It does not indicate a hardware failure.
Common scenarios
- Device configured for DHCP is connected to a network with no DHCP service.
- DHCP server is temporarily unavailable.
- Network isolation prevents DHCP traffic from reaching the server.
